R36S Custom Firmware Guide: ArkOS, Knulli & More

The stock firmware on your R36S is decent — but custom firmware transforms it into a completely different device. Here's everything you need to know about ArkOS, Knulli, and AmberELEC.

Why Switch to Custom Firmware?

  • Better game compatibility and performance
  • Beautiful, modern user interface
  • Advanced features: netplay, RetroAchievements, scrapers
  • Better save state management
  • Active community support and updates

ArkOS

The most popular choice. Stable, well-documented, and easy to install. Best for users who want a reliable, set-and-forget experience.

Custom firmware is written to a card, not to the console. Flash a spare and your working setup stays untouched.

Knulli

The newest option with the most modern interface. Better PSP and Dreamcast performance than ArkOS. Best for power users who want cutting-edge features.

How to Install (Any Firmware)

  1. Download the firmware image for your R36S model
  2. Download Balena Etcher (free) on your PC or Mac
  3. Insert a new MicroSD card (32GB+ recommended)
  4. Flash the firmware image to the card
  5. Insert the card into your R36S and power on
  6. First boot takes 1-2 minutes — then you're done

Which Should You Choose?

  • Beginner? ArkOS. It just works.
  • Power user? Knulli. More features, better performance.
  • Don't want to tinker? Keep stock — it's perfectly fine for casual play.
